A couple weeks ago I wrote up a little piece on building a better workspace through music. Today I’d like to share with you another option — podcasts. I love podcasts. I listen to one non-stop to the point of exhaustion, then turn it off, abuse another one and then eventually return.  For the most part I listen to either comedy podcasts like WTF, The Nerdist Podcast, Mohr Stories or web design and development podcasts. Since this is a web design and development blog I’ll just focus on those web design and development podcasts you should be listening to.

Benefit to Podcasts

Listening to music while you’re programming is great. You can zone into the code, create a rhythm in you head to keep you energized and also just simply give you something to listen to that isn’t overwhelmingly distractive. Podcasts are different. Podcasts you need to listen to even if you are doing so passively so if you need to focus and keep your blood pumping during a long hack-a-thon than Mastodon is probably the better choice. However, for those days where you’re not locked into a huge coding project that requires every cell in your brain, web podcasts are freaking great.

Web design podcasts – podcasts you should be listening to – are great for keeping up with what it current around the interwebs, here is a handful of reasons why Podcasts can keep you productive and energized at work:

  • Stay up to date with new web technologies and practices
  • Learn and discover new design and development methods
  • Learn best practices from industry leading creators and developers
  • Find out new web projects that will benefit you as a designer or developer
  • Discover new tools and tricks
  • Be able to brag to your fellow designers and developers about all of your new knowledge
  • Keep you ears filled with something other than the guy next to you eating chips

Get On With it Already

Alright, enough with the blahdy blah blah crap, let’s get down to the actual podcasts. I’ve created a little list of podcasts that I either currently subscribe, just discovered or have listened to in the past. These are all great podcast and I know there is a lot more out there so what are the podcasts that you listen too? Is there any other “podcasts you should be listening to” that I’ve left out? Drop a comment and let us all know.
